Telnyx
Real calls can also run on your own Telnyx account. Telnyx bills you directly for minutes and numbers. A tenant uses one carrier at a time.
Before you connect: short calls
Telnyx charges for short calls, and says it does not support use cases that need them. If you run campaigns, read this first.
- Once more than 15% of your calls are short, Telnyx may charge $0.01 on all of your short calls, and it wants to be told in advance. See its short calls page for what counts as one.
- Telnyx's policy also covers low answer rates and abandoned calls, and it publishes no figures for those.
- Its terms bar auto-dialing unsolicited calls. Read its terms.
Campaigns make short calls by nature. A call that reaches a machine usually ends within seconds, unless the campaign has onVoicemail. If your campaigns depend on many short calls, talk to Telnyx before connecting, or stay on Twilio. Your traffic, its charges and its acceptance are between you and Telnyx, on your own account.
Connect your account
You need an outbound voice profile that allows the countries you call. Only owners and admins can connect an account.
- In the dashboard, open Settings, then Telephony.
- On the Telnyx card, press Connect Telnyx.
- Enter your API key, Public key and Account id, all from the Telnyx portal. Add the Outbound voice profile id only if the account has more than one.
- Press Connect.
Connecting creates one TeXML application in your account. Disconnecting deletes it, and any softphone logins we made there.
Import your numbers
Press Import numbers, pick the ones you want and press Import. Buy any new numbers in the Telnyx portal first.
Importing points each number at our application, and we remember where it pointed. Removing a number or disconnecting the account puts it back. The number itself is never deleted from Telnyx.
What a number does is set the same way as on Twilio. See Choose what a number does.
Limits
| Limit | Where it starts |
|---|---|
| Campaign dial limits | Connecting lowers yours to 1 call a second and 5 at once, if they're higher. Change them in Settings, Outbound |
| Telnyx's own limits | Its docs give paid accounts 5 calls at once, 10 outbound an hour and 100 a day. Ask Telnyx to raise them before a campaign |
Telnyx sets its limits on your account, and we can't see them. We keep to your dial limits, and don't count calls by the hour or the day. If Telnyx refuses a call over its limit, that call fails.
What's different from Twilio
| Feature | On Telnyx |
|---|---|
| AI agents | Over SIP only. See AI agents |
| Recording | Can't be paused. A call asked to pause its recording gets an error, rather than recording what you meant to leave out |
| Softphone logins | Last about a day, not an hour. Removing a rep deletes their login |
| Hold | A held caller hears the music we host, the same on every account |
